## What you need to know

A passwordless member can lose access to the entire account unless the documented transition is completed first.

## Potentially affected

This applies to the documented Bitwarden trusted-device account type without a master password. It is a planned account-transition issue, not a recommendation to preserve access during a security termination.

## DSE recommendation

DSE recommends identifying the member’s actual decryption and recovery state before a planned organization departure.

## Article

A passwordless member can lose access to the entire account unless the documented transition is completed first.

## Source facts

Bitwarden’s succession guide describes a specific removal risk for members who have no master password because they use SSO with trusted devices. Removing such a member eliminates account access unless account recovery first assigns a master password and the member signs in with that password at least once before removal. Without those steps, the guide says the removed user cannot simply rejoin and must delete the account and receive a new invitation. Revoking organization access also locks out the account until that access is restored.

## Applicability

This applies to the documented Bitwarden trusted-device account type without a master password. It is a planned account-transition issue, not a recommendation to preserve access during a security termination.

## DSE recommendation

DSE recommends identifying the member’s actual decryption and recovery state before a planned organization departure. Decide with the data owner whether the person is meant to retain an individual account and what data may remain there. If that transition is approved, follow the documented recovery and first-login sequence before removal, using protected credential handling. Keep the timing separate from any immediate security revocation requirement. Do not assume that sending another invitation will repair an account whose required transition was skipped.

## Verification

Rehearse the approved sequence with a synthetic passwordless test account. Confirm the assigned master password works through an actual sign-in before removing the test membership. Verify the intended post-removal account behavior and retained organization ownership, then document the outcome without copying credentials or real vault data.
