## What you need to know

Use the ENGAGE 8.1.0 guide to distinguish pending changes, programming and the returned audit acknowledgment.

## Potentially affected

ENGAGE Managed Property workflows documented in the 8.1.0 User's Guide, revision 02/23-8.1.0.

## DSE recommendation

Record change submission, applicable programming steps and returned acknowledgment as separate checkpoints.

## Article

Bottom line: DSE recommends closing an ENGAGE update task against the documented acknowledgment, not only the programming attempt. Keep the requested change, the action at the affected door and the returned evidence distinguishable in the change record.

## Source fact: the icon depends on returned evidence

The Update ICONS section on page 16 of the [ENGAGE Managed Property 8.1.0 User’s Guide](https://commercial.schlage.com/content/dam/allegion-us-2/web-documents-2/UserGuide/Schlage_ENGAGE_User_Guide_113180.pdf) says a device update icon remains until returned audit information lets ENGAGE acknowledge that the door update was accomplished. The guide says the icon is removed once that acknowledgment appears in a returned audit.

The same section treats credential updates separately. It says the credential update icon remains until the desired changes are programmed, and that changes are not valid until the credential is presented to the affected doors or devices. These statements are bounded to the captured 8.1.0 guide, revision 02/23-8.1.0.

## What the source does not establish

This guide does not establish the behavior of later ENGAGE releases or every connected access-control integration. An icon is also not sufficient evidence of the required physical door behavior. Establish the applicable software version and update method before using this acknowledgment model to assess a live task.

## Applicability questions

- Is the pending item a device change, a credential change or both?

- Which guide and software version govern the installed property?

- What programming or presentation steps apply to the chosen delivery method?

- Who can collect the returned audit for the correct device?

- What separate access test will demonstrate the intended after-state?

## DSE recommendation: track the change through acknowledgment

The following steps are DSE recommendations based on the guide’s update boundaries.

Create a small update ledger identifying the affected door or device, the intended change, its owner and the documented delivery method. Include only the milestones required for that method. Distinguish entry of a change into the management application from an attempt to deliver or program it.

For a credential-related change, identify which doors must receive the relevant presentation or update under the applicable procedure. Record that work without copying credential secrets into the ledger. For a device change, have the operator retain the corresponding audit evidence and compare the identity with the intended target.

If an icon remains, investigate the outstanding milestone before repeating the programming operation. Ask whether the attempt occurred, whether the intended target was addressed and whether the required evidence returned. If the available evidence is incomplete, label the task unresolved rather than inferring either success or failure solely from the indicator.

## Verification and evidence

Use a controlled rehearsal or an approved limited change to compare the management record, the action at the door and the returned acknowledgment. Preserve the sequence and timestamps so another operator can understand which stage was observed.

Then perform the separately approved access test with the responsible owner. Check the intended allowed and denied cases without expanding access to unrelated users or openings. Record a discrepancy between administrative acknowledgment and observed door behavior as its own issue.

Retain the applicable guide revision, software version, device identity, change request, delivery record, returned audit and test result. Keep unanswered items visible; do not convert an incomplete record into a completed task merely to clear a queue.
