## What you need to know

Updating a ConfigMap does not refresh every way an application consumes its values.

## Potentially affected

Review ConfigMap consumption through a mounted volume, environment variables or a subPath mount.

## DSE recommendation

DSE recommends recording whether each setting is delivered through environment variables, an ordinary mounted directory, or a subPath mount.

## Article

Updating a ConfigMap does not refresh every way an application consumes its values.

## Source facts

Kubernetes eventually refreshes projected keys from a ConfigMap mounted as a volume. Values consumed as environment variables are not updated automatically and require Pod restart. A ConfigMap mounted with subPath does not receive ConfigMap updates. These are different delivery paths even when they originate from the same configuration object.

## Applicability

Review ConfigMap consumption through a mounted volume, environment variables or a subPath mount.

## DSE recommendation

DSE recommends recording whether each setting is delivered through environment variables, an ordinary mounted directory, or a subPath mount. Decide whether a configuration change requires file reload, process restart, or managed Pod replacement. Keep that decision in the deployment procedure instead of assuming an API update has already reached running processes. Include a way to identify the configuration revision actually in use. Avoid storing confidential material in ConfigMaps merely because the update mechanism is convenient.

## Verification

In a test workload, change a harmless configuration value and inspect the environment, mounted file, and application-reported value independently. Repeat with a subPath mount if the application uses one. Confirm that the approved refresh procedure makes the running behavior match the intended revision before applying a production change. Record both the API object’s revision and the value reported by the running application. Ask the application owner to identify which observation authorizes closing the configuration change, including any reload or replacement step.
