## What you need to know

Google gives ChromeOS devices 10 years of automatic updates from the platform release date and publishes each model’s end date. After the final update, policies may not work as intended and technical support is not provided, so the date belongs in purchasing and replacement planning.

## Potentially affected

Schools, offices and kiosks using Chromebooks, Chromeboxes or Chromebases, and the IT teams and resellers who buy and manage them.

## DSE recommendation

DSE recommends recording each ChromeOS model’s published automatic-update date in the asset inventory and buying only models with years of updates left.

## Article

Google gives ChromeOS devices 10 years of automatic updates from the platform release date and publishes each model’s end date. After the final update, policies may not work as intended and technical support is not provided, so the date belongs in purchasing and replacement planning.

## Source facts

Google’s [Auto Update policy](https://support.google.com/chrome/a/answer/6220366?hl=en) says ChromeOS devices receive 10 years of updates from the platform release date, covering the operating system, browser and hardware. For devices prior to 2021 that receive extended updates, some features and services might not be supported, and devices marked in the list must opt in to receive extended updates.

After devices receive their final automatic update, existing and future policies may not work as intended, and technical support will not be provided. Devices still receiving updates work with ChromeOS Education Upgrade and ChromeOS Enterprise Upgrade.

Google publishes how long each platform will receive automatic updates after its release, so buyers can check the date when making a purchasing decision. Even a Chromebook no longer receiving updates still has secure mode, a self-check at every start-up that typically repairs a tampered or corrupted system.

## Applicability

Use this for any managed ChromeOS fleet. The date is set per model, not per purchase, so a device bought late in its platform’s life has fewer years of updates remaining.

## DSE recommendation

DSE recommends recording each ChromeOS model’s published automatic-update date in the asset inventory and buying only models with years of updates left. Opt eligible older devices into extended updates where Google requires it, plan replacements before the end date, and keep devices past their final update off sensitive systems because management policies may stop working as intended.

## Verification

Export the device list from the admin console each term or quarter, match each model to Google’s published date, and flag devices within a year of their end date. Confirm opt-in status for models that require it.
