## What you need to know

It temporarily bypasses edge caching without deleting the previously cached files.

## Potentially affected

This concerns Cloudflare's Development Mode.

## DSE recommendation

DSE recommends using the mode only for a bounded diagnostic or review task with a clear owner and finish time.

## Article

It temporarily bypasses edge caching without deleting the previously cached files.

## Source facts

Cloudflare documents Development Mode as a temporary suspension of edge caching and Polish for three hours unless disabled sooner. It does not purge existing cached files. For longer bypass requirements, the source points to a Cache Rule rather than repeatedly treating the temporary switch as a permanent configuration.

## Applicability

This concerns Cloudflare’s Development Mode.

## DSE recommendation

DSE recommends using the mode only for a bounded diagnostic or review task with a clear owner and finish time. Verify changes under the normal cache policy before declaring a release complete. Use versioned assets or the appropriate targeted purge when stored content must actually be replaced. Keep a separate record of any deliberate long-term bypass so another administrator does not assume that Development Mode is the lasting source of uncached behavior. Make normal-mode verification a required release sign-off after the temporary review. Ask the owner to identify the exact content revision expected once bypass ends, and compare that value in a clean session. Keep the temporary switch’s finish time distinct from the content publication time.

## Verification

With a controlled asset, record normal cached behavior, enable the temporary mode, and confirm the intended fresh origin response. Disable it and verify the final version under ordinary caching, applying the planned invalidation if required. Check a clean browser session separately so browser storage does not obscure the difference between bypass and purge.
