Azure managed-disk ZRS is available for Premium SSD and Standard SSD, not Premium SSD v2 or Ultra Disk. The documented migration path depends on whether the disk is regional or zonal. Regional disks can change directly through the documented stopped-VM procedure. Zonal disks cannot switch directly: the procedure creates a snapshot and a new ZRS disk, leaving the source disk intact. ## Applicability

Identify the disk’s current redundancy, availability-zone setting, type, and role as an OS or data disk. Review all disks needed by the application together. Do not infer the conversion method solely from the desired ZRS setting or from another disk’s successful change.

## DSE recommendation

Classify the disk’s existing placement before approving either an in-place change or a replacement-disk migration. For a regional disk, schedule the documented stop and configuration change. For a zonal disk, plan the snapshot, new disk, and replacement VM arrangement as a migration with separate acceptance and cleanup decisions. Ask the application owner to approve the interruption and the method used to establish a consistent recovery point.

## Verification

Inspect the resulting disk identifiers, redundancy, and attachments against the selected path. For a snapshot-based replacement, compare the new VM’s OS and data-disk mapping with the migration plan and test the application’s required data access. Keep the source disk until the replacement is accepted. Record its eventual disposition separately so successful creation of a ZRS disk is not mistaken for a completed workload migration.
