## What you need to know

Verify foreign-key initialization through every SQLite application connection path.

## Potentially affected

This applies to SQLite applications using foreign-key constraints. It addresses connection initialization and verification, not a claim that enabling enforcement repairs pre-existing relationship errors.

## DSE recommendation

DSE recommends placing the setting and its check in the application's actual connection-initialization path, before transactional work starts.

## Article

Verify foreign-key initialization through every SQLite application connection path.

## Source facts

SQLite foreign-key enforcement depends on library support and the runtime setting of each database connection. The documentation advises applications to set the intended behavior explicitly instead of assuming the default. The foreign_keys pragma can report whether enforcement is enabled. Changing it in the middle of a multistatement transaction has no effect and does not return an error. Consequently, enabling it in one administrative session or after a transaction has begun does not establish enforcement throughout an application’s connection pool.

## Applicability

This applies to SQLite applications using foreign-key constraints. It addresses connection initialization and verification, not a claim that enabling enforcement repairs pre-existing relationship errors.

## DSE recommendation

DSE recommends placing the setting and its check in the application’s actual connection-initialization path, before transactional work starts. Have the developer review every worker and pool that opens its own connection. Keep a separate plan for investigating existing inconsistent data before enforcing a changed application policy. Include the library build and deployed version in the review. Avoid relying on a successful administrative command as evidence that background tasks or newly created pooled connections follow the same rules.

## Verification

With disposable application data, inspect the setting on newly opened pooled connections and attempt a deliberately invalid relationship through each relevant code path. Verify the expected rejection without changing production records. Check transaction timing explicitly and retain any connection path that failed to initialize enforcement.
