## What you need to know

A detection identifies a possible exposure; the credential owner still needs to confirm and resolve its state.

## Potentially affected

This concerns GitHub secret-scanning detection and triage. It does not guarantee complete coverage for every secret format or show that an application has adopted a replacement credential.

## DSE recommendation

DSE recommends assigning findings to the system owner who can revoke or rotate the affected credential.

## Article

A detection identifies a possible exposure; the credential owner still needs to confirm and resolve its state.

## Source facts

GitHub secret scanning examines repository history and documented collaboration surfaces for supported credential patterns. Detected leaks can produce repository alerts. GitHub advises immediate credential rotation after an alert. For partner secrets, GitHub can notify the issuing provider directly. Optional validity checks may contact that provider to determine whether a detected credential remains active; alert and validity behavior depends on the secret type and feature configuration.

## Applicability

This concerns GitHub secret-scanning detection and triage. It does not guarantee complete coverage for every secret format or show that an application has adopted a replacement credential.

## DSE recommendation

DSE recommends assigning findings to the system owner who can revoke or rotate the affected credential. Track exposure, credential status and consumer replacement as separate incident fields. Review available scanning scope and validity options for the repository’s plan before promising coverage. Keep secret values out of copied reports and preserve only the identifiers and evidence needed to coordinate remediation. Keep the credential owner and application owner visible in the same remediation task. Define closure evidence for both revocation and consumer replacement, and require a written explanation when a detection is dismissed so a closed alert is not the only retained decision.

## Verification

Proposed verification: use approved test patterns and the supported test workflow to confirm detection routing and ownership. For an authorized credential exercise, verify revocation with the issuing service and confirm the intended application still works with its replacement. Retain the alert decision and consumer checks without assuming that closing an alert proves rotation completed.
