## What you need to know

An invited Reporter group can be used for deployment access while repository write authority stays separate.

## Potentially affected

This applies to GitLab protected environments and deployment-only group access. It does not confer branch-write permission, operating-system access, or authorization inside the application being deployed.

## DSE recommendation

DSE recommends defining the release operator’s exact responsibility before assigning a broad project role.

## Article

An invited Reporter group can be used for deployment access while repository write authority stays separate.

## Source facts

GitLab protected environments control who may deploy to an environment. The documentation describes deployment-only access for users who can deploy but lack push or merge permission on the deployed branch. Reporter-role users receive protected-environment access through group membership rather than individual selection. Invited groups can appear in the Allowed to deploy list. The environment relationship must be represented by the deployment job’s configuration; GitLab needs that association to apply the protected-environment authorization model. Protected environments are documented for Premium and Ultimate.

## Applicability

This applies to GitLab protected environments and deployment-only group access. It does not confer branch-write permission, operating-system access, or authorization inside the application being deployed.

## DSE recommendation

DSE recommends defining the release operator’s exact responsibility before assigning a broad project role. Keep repository authorship, release approval, and job execution as separate permission decisions. Document the invited group, environment name, and deployment job that connects them. Review group inheritance and other project memberships so an intended deployment-only operator does not gain write access through another path. Preserve a clear owner for the protected environment and recheck these relationships when renaming environments or restructuring groups.

## Verification

With a test Reporter-group member, verify that the intended deployment job can be started while repository push and merge remain unavailable. Compare a user outside the group. Confirm the job is associated with the correct protected environment and review the effective access from all memberships.
