## What you need to know

Reducing notification floods should preserve the scope needed for a useful incident response.

## Potentially affected

Review Alertmanager grouping, silence and inhibition choices before changing incident notifications.

## DSE recommendation

DSE recommends choosing grouping labels that reflect how staff will investigate and own an incident.

## Article

Reducing notification floods should preserve the scope needed for a useful incident response.

## Source facts

Prometheus Alertmanager deduplicates, groups and routes alerts to receivers. Grouping combines alerts of similar nature into one notification, particularly during larger outages. Silences mute matching alerts for a time, while inhibition suppresses notifications based on other firing alerts.

## Applicability

Review Alertmanager grouping, silence and inhibition choices before changing incident notifications.

## DSE recommendation

DSE recommends choosing grouping labels that reflect how staff will investigate and own an incident. Keep service or site boundaries where merging would create ambiguity. Use a documented silence for planned work and a carefully reviewed inhibition relationship for known causal dependencies. Avoid reducing noise by simply muting an entire population indefinitely. Preserve a way to inspect every affected alert even when only one grouped notification is delivered, and assign responsibility for reviewing stale silences.

## Verification

With synthetic test alerts, trigger several related and unrelated conditions and inspect the resulting groups and receiver routes. Exercise a time-bounded silence separately from an inhibition rule. Confirm responders can still identify all affected instances and that notifications resume as intended when the suppression condition ends. Retain the group key and full alert membership with each received notification. Ask the receiving team to identify every affected service from the grouped output and approve where unrelated failures must remain separate incidents.
