## What you need to know

A container can appear directly on the physical network while remaining unable to reach its own host.

## Potentially affected

Review Docker macvlan host communication, upstream multiple-MAC support and address allocation.

## DSE recommendation

DSE recommends identifying application traffic and host-management traffic as separate paths before choosing macvlan.

## Article

A container can appear directly on the physical network while remaining unable to reach its own host.

## Source facts

Docker documents a Linux kernel restriction preventing direct communication between macvlan containers and their host. Suggested designs include an additional bridge connection or a host macvlan interface on the same parent. Macvlan also requires network equipment that can support multiple MAC addresses on one interface and can create IP-address or MAC-address pressure.

## Applicability

Review Docker macvlan host communication, upstream multiple-MAC support and address allocation.

## DSE recommendation

DSE recommends identifying application traffic and host-management traffic as separate paths before choosing macvlan. Reserve the intended subnet and addresses, review physical-interface ownership, and confirm the upstream network’s supported configuration. Do not mistake successful access from another LAN device for proof that host-based backup or monitoring will work. Keep any additional bridge or host interface narrowly scoped and documented. Review the number of generated MAC addresses when scaling so the design does not exhaust network expectations.

## Verification

On an approved test segment, compare reachability from a LAN peer, the Docker host, and the intended management path. Inspect address allocation and required switch behavior. Confirm backup and monitoring use a deliberately supported route and remove all disposable network objects after validation. Retain the host, peer and container addresses with each reachability observation. Have the network owner approve the expected MAC count and the management route, including how a future container scale change will be reviewed.
