## What you need to know

Microsoft’s PowerShell support lifecycle page lists PowerShell 7.4 (LTS) and 7.5 ending support on 10-Nov-2026, and PowerShell 7.6 (LTS), released 18-Mar-2026, supported to 14-Nov-2028. After a version reaches end of life, no further updates, including security updates, are provided.

## Potentially affected

IT teams and vendors that run scripts, scheduled tasks, monitoring agents or automation on PowerShell 7.4 or 7.5, on Windows, Linux or macOS.

## DSE recommendation

DSE recommends upgrading every PowerShell 7.4 and 7.5 installation to PowerShell 7.6 LTS before November 10, 2026, and testing production scripts on 7.6 first.

## Article

Microsoft’s PowerShell support lifecycle page lists PowerShell 7.4 (LTS) and 7.5 ending support on 10-Nov-2026, and PowerShell 7.6 (LTS), released 18-Mar-2026, supported to 14-Nov-2028. After a version reaches end of life, no further updates, including security updates, are provided.

## Source facts

Microsoft’s [PowerShell Support Lifecycle page](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/scripting/install/powershell-support-lifecycle) lists PowerShell 7.4 (LTS) on .NET 8.0 and PowerShell 7.5 on .NET 9.0 with end of support on 10-Nov-2026, and PowerShell 7.6 (LTS) on .NET 10.0, released 18-Mar-2026, with end of support on 14-Nov-2028. It says the PowerShell support lifecycle follows the support lifecycle of .NET, and that after a version reaches end of life no further updates, including security updates, are provided.

The page says Microsoft supports only the latest update version of a release, that LTS updates contain only critical security updates and servicing fixes, and that Stable releases are supported for about six months after the next LTS release. It also says the page covers PowerShell rather than Windows PowerShell, which is a component of Windows subject to the Windows support lifecycle, and that modules shipped outside the PowerShell package, such as the ActiveDirectory module in Windows Server, follow their own support.

## Applicability

Use this for PowerShell 7.x installations. Windows PowerShell 5.1 follows the Windows lifecycle instead, and scripts may depend on modules with their own support terms.

## DSE recommendation

DSE recommends upgrading every PowerShell 7.4 and 7.5 installation to PowerShell 7.6 LTS before November 10, 2026, and testing production scripts on 7.6 first. Inventory where PowerShell 7 is installed, including servers, jump hosts, build agents and containers, pin automation to the supported LTS line, and keep each installation on the latest update version.

## Verification

Report installed PowerShell versions from management tools, confirm no 7.4 or 7.5 installations remain after November 10, 2026, and rerun scheduled tasks and monitoring scripts after each upgrade to confirm they still succeed.
