## What you need to know

Instance tags exposed through metadata become readable by local processes.

## Potentially affected

This applies to instance-tag access through EC2 metadata, including launch-template settings.

## DSE recommendation

DSE recommends reviewing tag content before enabling this convenience for application bootstrapping.

## Article

Instance tags exposed through metadata become readable by local processes.

## Source facts

EC2 instance tags are unavailable in metadata until access is explicitly enabled. Local processes can then read tag information without DescribeInstances or DescribeTags calls. Tag changes update metadata while the instance runs. Metadata-accessible tags have additional key restrictions that can cause launch or configuration failures when violated.

## Applicability

This applies to instance-tag access through EC2 metadata, including launch-template settings.

## DSE recommendation

DSE recommends reviewing tag content before enabling this convenience for application bootstrapping. Keep secrets and unnecessary personal data out of the tag schema. Identify which local processes need the information and review their broader access to metadata. Check existing keys against the documented restrictions before changing a launch template. Record which applications consume each tag so a later rename or removal is reviewed as an application dependency rather than a harmless inventory edit. Treat the published tag schema as an application interface with a change owner. Include one representative consumer in the approval and record how a missing or renamed tag should be handled, avoiding an undocumented dependency on an inventory label.

## Verification

Proposed verification: inspect the metadata-tag setting on a test instance, read a harmless approved tag, and observe an intentional tag update without restarting the instance. Confirm disabled behavior and validate the tag-key format before applying the same setting to production templates.
