Microsoft’s [Teams Rooms app and Windows versioning support](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteams/rooms/rooms-lifecycle-support) page says the Teams Rooms application follows an evergreen model in which the current and immediately previous major app versions are supported. Microsoft recommends keeping the app current and notes that a defect in an older app version can require installing the latest version to receive the fix.

Teams Rooms on Windows does not follow an ordinary user-PC feature-update schedule. Microsoft intentionally delays new Windows feature updates for up to six months or more while it validates the Teams Rooms app, room hardware, manufacturer images, and certified audio-video peripherals. During that validation period, administrators should not force the next Windows release through another management tool or override the policies used to hold it. Supported devices update to an appropriate Windows release through their room maintenance process.

As reviewed on August 11, 2026, Microsoft’s table lists Windows 11 25H2 as recommended with Teams Rooms app 5.6.210.0 or later and Windows 11 24H2 as supported with app 5.3.205.0 or later. That table is time-sensitive and should be consulted directly before acting. Microsoft states that Teams Rooms on Windows 10 reached the end of its supported path on October 14, 2025 and is not supported through Windows 10 Extended Security Updates. Some older certified room systems cannot upgrade to Windows 11 and require replacement; Microsoft’s list is illustrative, not exhaustive, so the device manufacturer remains part of the determination.

The operating system is only one dependency. A functional room also relies on a supported Teams Rooms license, room account, certified compute and peripherals, display path, USB and audio topology, network, power, calendar integration, and an available nightly maintenance window.

## DSE recommendation: give every room a lifecycle record and an owner

Manage the room as a complete service. Create one record per physical room with the following minimum data:

- site, room name, business owner, support owner, and meeting criticality;

- compute manufacturer, exact model, serial number, processor, warranty, Windows eligibility, and replacement date;

- Teams Rooms app version, Windows version and build, license type, room-account identity, and management enrollment;

- camera, microphone, speaker, console, display, content-ingest, USB extender, firmware, and certified combinations;

- network connection, VLAN or service path, switch port, power protection, and maintenance-window availability.

Compare that record with Microsoft’s live support table and the manufacturer’s lifecycle information at least quarterly. Flag unsupported Windows versions, app versions outside the current-and-previous major window, devices without a Windows 11 path, expired warranty, unavailable firmware, licensing mismatch, and rooms that routinely miss nightly maintenance because they are powered off or reserved around the clock.

- Protect maintenance. Give the system time to download, install, restart, and return before the first meeting. Document local shutdown habits, power timers, and reservations that interfere with the window.

- Pilot by room design. Test each distinct compute, camera, audio, controller, and display combination. One boardroom does not represent a divisible training room or a different manufacturer bundle.

- Validate the whole meeting. Join an internal and an allowed external meeting; place and receive calls where licensed; test calendar join, camera framing, microphones, speakers, mute indicators, content sharing, touch control, dual displays, and meeting exit.

- Test degraded conditions. Confirm documented behavior after a restart, peripheral disconnect and reconnect, display power cycle, network interruption, and account or calendar issue. Record the support path rather than improvising during an executive meeting.

- Plan replacement early. Budget and schedule rooms that cannot follow Microsoft’s supported Windows path. Include procurement, mounting, cabling, configuration, calendar cutover, user communication, and disposal—not just the compute price.

Track first-meeting readiness, update adoption, peripheral faults, rooms outside support, failed nightly maintenance, incident frequency, and replacement lead time. The result should be a room that is ready before a person walks in, with lifecycle decisions made months before a hardware limit becomes a meeting outage.
