## What you need to know

Editing one file may have no effect when a higher-precedence input supplies the value.

## Potentially affected

Review the ordered inputs that determine a Compose container's final environment values.

## DSE recommendation

DSE recommends recording the authoritative source for each operational setting and avoiding unnecessary duplicate definitions.

## Article

Editing one file may have no effect when a higher-precedence input supplies the value.

## Source facts

Docker Compose documents an ordered environment precedence. A docker compose run -e override is highest. Interpolated environment or env_file values, explicit environment entries, env_file entries, and image ENV defaults follow the documented order. Several sources can therefore define the same key while only one supplies the container’s final value.

## Applicability

Review the ordered inputs that determine a Compose container’s final environment values.

## DSE recommendation

DSE recommends recording the authoritative source for each operational setting and avoiding unnecessary duplicate definitions. When a value appears wrong, inspect the invocation and effective model before changing the image. Keep secrets out of shared diagnostic dumps; confirm source and presence without printing the value. Review deployment wrappers, automation variables, and interactive command overrides because they can supersede the file under review. Make the intended precedence part of the runbook so emergency overrides do not become unexplained permanent configuration.

## Verification

Using harmless test values, define the same key in the relevant sources and inspect the resulting container environment. Remove or change the higher-precedence input and confirm the expected fallback. Verify the production deployment command uses the reviewed inputs without exposing real credentials in the evidence. Retain the sanitized invocation, Compose file revision and synthetic result together. Have the deployment owner identify and remove any unintended duplicate definition through change review, preserving the documented emergency override path.
