## What you need to know

An API object is not enough to establish that a usable storage snapshot exists.

## Potentially affected

Review snapshot CRDs, controllers and CSI driver capability before relying on a Kubernetes snapshot workflow.

## DSE recommendation

DSE recommends checking the installed snapshot CRDs, controller, driver support, and class before adding snapshots to a recovery procedure.

## Article

An API object is not enough to establish that a usable storage snapshot exists.

## Source facts

Kubernetes VolumeSnapshot support is available for CSI drivers, using snapshot custom resources, a snapshot controller and CSI-side integration. The controller watches VolumeSnapshot and VolumeSnapshotContent and creates or deletes content objects; csi-snapshotter triggers backend snapshot operations. Drivers may or may not implement snapshot functionality. Removal of a PVC used as a snapshot source is postponed until the snapshot is readyToUse or aborted.

## Applicability

Review snapshot CRDs, controllers and CSI driver capability before relying on a Kubernetes snapshot workflow.

## DSE recommendation

DSE recommends checking the installed snapshot CRDs, controller, driver support, and class before adding snapshots to a recovery procedure. Record both the Kubernetes content object and the backend snapshot identifier. Define how application writes are made consistent for the intended restore, and distinguish that application requirement from storage-level snapshot creation. Retain the relevant status and error information when a snapshot stalls. A recovery plan should specify a tested restoration path and ownership of snapshots after the original workload is removed.

## Verification

Using disposable data, create a snapshot and wait for the documented ready status. Restore it through the supported driver workflow, inspect the resulting data, and record the application-consistency limitation. Keep this exercise separate from any claim that production recovery has already been validated. Preserve the driver’s actual result and object identities, including a failed attempt. Make the recovery owner decide what additional consistency and retention evidence is required before the procedure becomes part of a service’s recovery plan.
