## What you need to know

Microsoft’s lifecycle page lists Windows Server 2022 mainstream support ending in October 2026 and extended support in October 2031. Extended support keeps security updates at no extra cost but ends non-security updates and design-change requests, and hotpatching on Datacenter: Azure Edition is supported only through mainstream support.

## Potentially affected

Organizations running Windows Server 2022 Datacenter, Datacenter: Azure Edition, Essentials or Standard, including container hosts, and the providers who maintain them.

## DSE recommendation

DSE recommends keeping Windows Server 2022 patched monthly through extended support while giving each server a replacement date before October 2031.

## Article

Microsoft’s lifecycle page lists Windows Server 2022 mainstream support ending in October 2026 and extended support in October 2031. Extended support keeps security updates at no extra cost but ends non-security updates and design-change requests, and hotpatching on Datacenter: Azure Edition is supported only through mainstream support.

## Source facts

Microsoft’s [Windows Server 2022 lifecycle page](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/products/windows-server-2022) says the product follows the Fixed Lifecycle Policy for the Datacenter, Datacenter: Azure Edition, Essentials and Standard editions, and lists mainstream support ending in October 2026 and extended support ending in October 2031. It notes that containers released with Windows Server 2022 follow the same dates and that hotpatching is supported on Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition Core through the end of mainstream support.

Microsoft’s [Fixed Lifecycle Policy](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/policies/fixed) says mainstream support includes incident support, security update support and the ability to request non-security updates, while extended support includes paid support and security updates at no additional cost. During extended support Microsoft will not accept requests for warranty support, design changes or new features, and incident support benefits included with licenses or programs such as Software Assurance are only available during mainstream support.

## Applicability

Use this for every Windows Server 2022 edition, including virtual machines and containers. Servers keep receiving security updates until extended support ends, so this is a planning milestone rather than an emergency.

## DSE recommendation

DSE recommends keeping Windows Server 2022 patched monthly through extended support while giving each server a replacement date before October 2031. Note which servers relied on hotpatching or included incident support, schedule reboot windows for Azure Edition servers that used hotpatch, and build new servers on a newer Windows Server release.

## Verification

List Windows Server 2022 machines from inventory with edition and role, confirm each installs monthly security updates, and record a replacement or upgrade date for each.
