Bitwarden emergency access requires an invitation, acceptance, and confirmation before a trusted contact can request access. After a request, the account holder can approve or reject it; otherwise access follows the configured waiting period. View access permits reading vault items, while Takeover asks the contact to set a new master password. The documentation also notes eligibility and organization-policy restrictions that must be checked for the account.

Applicability

Use this for an account’s documented emergency-access workflow. Evaluate organization account recovery separately when the requirement is employee offboarding or organizational succession.

DSE recommendation

DSE recommends agreeing the recovery purpose before choosing View or Takeover. Select a trusted contact who can maintain access to their own account, and choose a waiting period that reflects the owner’s ability to notice and reject an unexpected request. Explain the process to both parties and assign a periodic review. Keep organizational secrets subject to the organization’s approved ownership and recovery policy. Revisit the arrangement after a role change or loss of confidence in a contact.

Verification

Using an approved test account, verify invitation completion, notification delivery, request handling, and the chosen authority. Confirm the rejection path as well as approval. Record the exercise outcome and next review date without placing live vault contents or master passwords in the evidence.
