Executive summary

What you need to know

Review the certificate being renewed rather than assuming a kubeadm-config edit changes its attributes. Plan the relevant control-plane nodes and component reload procedure separately.

Potentially affected

Administrators using the documented manual kubeadm certificate-renewal workflow with its available CA material; external-CA lifecycle and CA replacement are outside scope.

DSE recommendation

DSE recommends comparing existing certificate attributes with the intended identity before approving kubeadm renewal.

Bottom line: Confirm the identity attributes already in the certificate before treating renewal as an identity change. Keep configuration reconciliation, certificate replacement and component adoption as separate steps in the control-plane maintenance plan.

Source fact: documented behavior

The Certificate Management with kubeadm documentation is the primary reference.

kubeadm certs renew takes Common Name, Organization and subject alternative names from the existing certificates, rather than relying on the kubeadm-config ConfigMap. For a replicated control plane, the documented manual renewal must be executed on all control-plane nodes. The documentation requires restarting control-plane Pods after renewal because dynamic certificate reload is not supported for every component and certificate.

What the source does not establish

This article reviews renewal of the existing intended identity. It does not provide a procedure for adding SANs, replacing a CA, approving a new client identity or managing an external CA. Obtain the exact release-specific certificate and restart procedure before acting. Keep private keys and complete credential files outside tickets and shared diagnostic output.

Applicability questions

  • Which existing certificate and attributes will renewal use?
  • Does that identity still match the approved endpoint and consumer?
  • Which control-plane nodes require the operation?
  • How will the affected components adopt and demonstrate the renewed material?

DSE recommendation: reconcile identity before scheduling renewal

DSE recommends comparing existing certificate attributes with the intended identity before approving kubeadm renewal.

Have the control-plane owner identify the exact certificate, CA arrangement and managed configuration. Inspect permitted public certificate details through approved tooling and record only safe identifying information. Compare Common Name, Organization and SANs with the intended endpoint or component role. Escalate an identity mismatch before running a renewal intended merely to extend that existing identity.

Reconcile the relevant kubeadm configuration with the approved certificate record. Preserve a difference as an explicit maintenance issue instead of assuming that editing the ConfigMap changes the renewal input. If attributes must change, obtain the appropriate separately reviewed procedure and revise the test plan before selecting the operation.

Prepare a node-by-node maintenance sequence for the replicated control plane where applicable. Name the operator, recovery access and component adoption check for every affected node. Use the installed version’s supported restart procedure; do not replace it with an improvised simultaneous disruption of all control-plane components.

After the approved operation, compare the resulting public certificate information with the intended unchanged identity and the observed validity period. Then verify component adoption through the normal supported health and connection checks. Keep an issuance outcome separate from proof that a running component now presents the intended material.

Verification and evidence

Proposed verification, not performed: begin with a desk case in which a ConfigMap proposes a new SAN while the existing certificate still contains the old attributes. Require the reviewer to reject treating ordinary renewal as proof that the proposed SAN will appear.

In an approved nonproduction kubeadm environment, inspect the existing public attributes, follow the accepted renewal and restart procedure, and inspect the result and actual component behavior. Retain safe certificate identifiers, node sequence, configuration references and observations. Stop for an unexpected identity or adoption result; never disable verification to make a renewed endpoint appear usable.
