What you need to know

Global Authenticated Origin Pulls proves Cloudflare network origin, not your account specifically.

Potentially affected

This concerns client-certificate authentication of Cloudflare-to-origin web requests.

DSE recommendation

DSE recommends stating whether the requirement is network provenance or account-specific origin access before choosing a level.

Global Authenticated Origin Pulls proves Cloudflare network origin, not your account specifically.

Source facts

Cloudflare documents global AOP using a certificate shared across accounts, while zone-level and per-hostname configurations use uploaded certificates. The more specific levels take precedence and are independently enabled. The source also states AOP has no effect for Cloudflare Tunnel origins, whose connector credentials authenticate the outbound tunnel path instead.

Applicability

This concerns client-certificate authentication of Cloudflare-to-origin web requests.

DSE recommendation

DSE recommends stating whether the requirement is network provenance or account-specific origin access before choosing a level. Configure and enforce the corresponding certificate trust at the origin; a dashboard switch alone does not establish rejection of unauthorized requests. Keep certificate rotation, private-key custody, and hostname scope documented. Do not add AOP to a Tunnel hostname expecting it to change the connector’s authentication model. Ask the origin owner to write the exact identity that must be proven: any Cloudflare network request or the organization’s chosen certificate. Keep a rejected unauthorized request beside the successful proxy request. Review the most-specific enabled level when rotating certificates rather than assuming a zone change overrides every hostname.

Verification

In a controlled origin test, confirm valid proxied requests succeed and direct requests lacking the required client certificate are rejected. Verify the presented certificate at each configured level and test rotation before expiry. Inspect server-certificate validation separately so origin authentication does not conceal an unrelated TLS trust problem.
