Executive summary

What you need to know

Approve extended-unlock authority separately from ordinary entry and identify who verifies return to the schedule.

Potentially affected

Applies to Verkada’s Double Badge schedule override and the supported reader/lock paths listed in its guide. This concerns an extended unlocked state, which is different from an ordinary timed entry.

DSE recommendation

DSE recommends approving override authority separately from routine door access.

Source facts

Verkada Double Badge lets an authorized person change an access-controlled door to an unlocked override by presenting a credential twice within five seconds. A second Double Badge removes that override. If nobody removes it, the override also clears when the schedule moves to a new time window or at midnight. The feature can be limited to selected groups that already have door access. It affects only the door used, and Pass Bluetooth or remote unlock does not perform Double Badge.

Applicability

Applies to Verkada’s Double Badge schedule override and the supported reader/lock paths listed in its guide. This concerns an extended unlocked state, which is different from an ordinary timed entry.

DSE recommendation

DSE recommends approving override authority separately from routine door access. Identify who may open the door for an event, who confirms it has returned to the scheduled state, and which schedule boundary ends the exception automatically. Train staff on the actual reader feedback and avoid assuming a second nearby door follows the first. Use groups with an accountable owner and review membership before events rather than giving everyone an undocumented extended-unlock capability.

Verification

At an approved test door, verify a permitted credential creates and removes the override and an ordinary excluded credential cannot create it. Observe the next relevant schedule boundary and check that the door returns as intended. Record each tested door; do not infer that a shared schedule creates a shared override.
