What you need to know
Why can an Image Builder trigger stop starting builds even though its template can still be run manually?
Potentially affected
Operators maintaining automatic source-image triggers for Azure Image Builder.
DSE recommendation
Investigate the failing template and prove a manual build succeeds before expecting automatic builds to resume.
Source facts
Azure Image Builder deactivates automatic triggers after repeated consecutive template build failures, whether those failures came from manual or automatic runs. Manual builds remain possible, and a successful manual build reactivates automatic triggers. The documented trigger type is SourceImage; its location must match the image template, and only one such trigger is supported per image. Microsoft Learn.
Applicability
Use this check when an established source-image build pipeline stops starting expected automatic work. Examine actual build history and trigger state instead of assuming the trigger object was deleted or the source never changed.
DSE recommendation
Investigate the failing template and prove a manual build succeeds before expecting automatic builds to resume. Have the image owner identify the underlying build error and test the correction with a controlled manual run. Keep the input image, template revision, and output expectation together in the incident record. Avoid creating duplicate triggers as a substitute for resolving a failing template or inventing a retry count that the source does not specify.
Verification
Check the manual build’s completed result, then inspect the trigger’s health and activation status using the documented view. Observe a subsequent eligible source update and record whether it produces the intended image. Keep template creation, trigger activation, and successful image output as separate evidence items. If automatic behavior does not return, retain the actual states and continue diagnosis rather than declaring recovery from the manual start request alone.
