Microsoft cautions against editing DNS server addresses directly in Azure VM network-connection properties: replacing the virtual adapter during service healing can erase those edits. Resource Manager deployments instead expose DNS server settings at virtual-network and network-interface scope.
After changing DNS settings for an already deployed network or VM, Microsoft instructs owners to renew DHCP leases on affected VMs so they receive the new settings. Microsoft Learn.
Applicability
Identify the affected machines and the Azure configuration object supplying their DNS addresses. Capture the existing custom server list and any interface-specific configuration before approving the change.
DSE recommendation
DSE recommends one change record linking the intended resolver addresses, Azure-side configuration, guest renewal step, and application checks. Coordinate the renewal with workload owners and preserve the previous resolver configuration. Keep the platform configuration and observed guest settings together so a temporary manual adjustment is not mistaken for the intended deployment state.
Verification
After the approved change and renewal, inspect the guest’s actual DNS server list. Resolve representative internal and external names and test the dependent application path. Compare results with the intended resolver, retaining timestamps and response evidence. Investigate an unchanged guest configuration before troubleshooting the DNS server itself.
