What you need to know
Why should the macOS VPN deployment channel be rechecked before authentication-certificate renewal?
Potentially affected
Use this review for Intune macOS VPN profiles that authenticate with certificates. Identify whether the intended credential belongs to a user or a device before planning renewal or replacement.
DSE recommendation
DSE recommends including channel alignment in the certificate-renewal checklist.
Source facts
The deployment channel determines which keychain stores VPN authentication certificates, and it cannot be edited after the profile is deployed. Microsoft directs user certificates to the user channel and device certificates to the device channel, which stores them in the system keychain. Changing the channel requires creating a new profile. Applicability
Use this review for Intune macOS VPN profiles that authenticate with certificates. Identify whether the intended credential belongs to a user or a device before planning renewal or replacement.
DSE recommendation
DSE recommends including channel alignment in the certificate-renewal checklist. Compare the VPN profile, linked certificate profile and intended identity. If they disagree, plan the new profile and its assignment handoff with the service owner before renewing credentials or removing the old configuration.
Verification
On an approved pilot Mac, inspect the intended certificate location and perform the VPN authentication workflow under the expected user context. Confirm the replacement profile and certificate agree before broader assignment. Retain the profile identities and observed service result without exporting private keys into support records.
