What you need to know
FMCSA says companies operating commercial vehicles in interstate commerce, including vehicles rated or weighing 10,001 pounds or more, must register and hold a USDOT number, and it lists Michigan among states that require one for intrastate registrants. Every registrant must update its record every two years or face deactivation and penalties.
Potentially affected
Companies whose installation, service or delivery vehicles, or truck and trailer combinations, reach 10,001 pounds, and the office staff who manage fleet compliance.
DSE recommendation
DSE recommends listing every company vehicle and trailer combination with its weight ratings, confirming whether any reaches 10,001 pounds, and registering and updating the USDOT record if so.

Source facts
FMCSA’s page Do I Need a USDOT Number? says companies that operate commercial vehicles transporting passengers or hauling cargo in interstate commerce must register with FMCSA and have a USDOT number, as must intrastate hazardous materials carriers that need a safety permit. A vehicle qualifies by weight if its gross vehicle or combination weight rating, or its actual gross weight, is 10,001 pounds or more, whichever is greater, and interstate commerce includes trips between two places in one state that pass through another state or are part of a shipment originating or ending outside the state.
The page says some states require intrastate commercial motor vehicle registrants to obtain a USDOT number, lists Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Wisconsin among them, and says to check with the responsible state agency for intrastate registration. FMCSA’s registration update page says every entity under its jurisdiction must update its information every two years, even with no changes, by filing an MCS-150 series form, and that missing the biennial update deactivates the USDOT number and may bring civil penalties of up to $1,000 per day, not to exceed $10,000.
Updates are due every 24 months by the last day of the month matching the USDOT number’s final digit, such as September for 9 and October for 0, in odd-numbered years when the next-to-last digit is odd and in even-numbered years when it is even.
Applicability
Use this for company trucks, vans, trailers and combinations that may reach 10,001 pounds by rating or actual weight. Once covered, carriers must know and follow the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations that apply, so review driver and vehicle requirements as well.
DSE recommendation
DSE recommends listing every company vehicle and trailer combination with its weight ratings, confirming whether any reaches 10,001 pounds, and registering and updating the USDOT record if so. Put the biennial update month on the compliance calendar, confirm Michigan intrastate requirements with the state, and recheck when you add trailers or heavier vehicles.
Verification
Look up the company in FMCSA’s SAFER Company Snapshot, confirm the last update date and fleet details are current, and keep the confirmation from each filing.
