What you need to know

A bypass is an exception decision with its own alert behavior, not evidence that a suspected secret is harmless.

Potentially affected

This concerns supported push-protection detections and bypass handling. It does not mean every credential format is detected or that selecting a reason verifies the contributor’s assessment.

DSE recommendation

DSE recommends assigning a reviewer to exceptions involving possible live credentials.

A bypass is an exception decision with its own alert behavior, not evidence that a suspected secret is harmless.

Source facts

GitHub push protection can block detected secrets before they reach a repository. Repository protection permits bypasses according to its configured policy; default writer bypasses require a reason. GitHub records repository bypass events and generates alerts, with different initial alert states for test data, false positives and a promise to fix later. User-level push protection has different alert behavior from repository protection.

Applicability

This concerns supported push-protection detections and bypass handling. It does not mean every credential format is detected or that selecting a reason verifies the contributor’s assessment.

DSE recommendation

DSE recommends assigning a reviewer to exceptions involving possible live credentials. Require a concrete explanation and an owned remediation plan when a bypass leaves work outstanding. Confirm whether protection is enabled for the repository as well as the user. Review delegated bypass and exemption settings deliberately, and keep exception authority separate from the convenience of completing a blocked push. Make the exception record identify who will validate the chosen reason and who owns any remaining credential work. Review recurring bypasses as a policy issue with the repository owner, using the actual exception history rather than assuming repeated developer assertions are sufficient.

Verification

Proposed verification: using harmless approved test material, confirm a block and inspect the resulting permitted exception path. Compare the selected reason with the alert state and audit evidence. Verify that an open remediation is assigned and completed through the credential owner’s process rather than considering the successful push itself to be closure.
