What you need to know
Distinguish ongoing replication from migration of data that already exists.
Potentially affected
This applies when enabling replication on a populated S3 bucket or assessing completeness after a new rule.
DSE recommendation
DSE recommends splitting the inventory into historical objects and future writes before claiming replica coverage.
Distinguish ongoing replication from migration of data that already exists.
Source facts
AWS documents live S3 replication primarily for objects created after the replication configuration is added. Objects that already existed before the rule require separate treatment, such as S3 Batch Replication. Replication also depends on source-object access and does not mean every bucket item or operation is copied.

Applicability
This applies when enabling replication on a populated S3 bucket or assessing completeness after a new rule.
DSE recommendation
DSE recommends splitting the inventory into historical objects and future writes before claiming replica coverage. Assign a migration owner to the historical population and retain the selection criteria used for the backfill. Review encryption, ownership and access requirements against representative objects. Define the completion evidence needed for recovery acceptance instead of judging the destination by a few visible files. Keep the replication configuration and the historical migration record together so later operators can distinguish their responsibilities. Choose a precise inventory cutoff for the backfill and reconcile exceptions by version where the recovery design needs that detail. Ask the recovery owner to sign off on the historical population separately from acceptance of the new replication rule.
Verification
Proposed verification: compare selected pre-rule and post-rule test objects at the destination, inspect replication status and review exceptions. Reconcile the historical inventory against the completed migration evidence before documenting that the older dataset is covered by the approved recovery plan.
