What you need to know
Changing the subjects and changing their granted role are different security operations.
Potentially affected
Review RoleBinding or ClusterRoleBinding replacement when its roleRef must change.
DSE recommendation
DSE recommends reviewing the complete subject list before replacing a binding, even when only the role name appears to change in the request.

Source facts
Kubernetes makes a RoleBinding or ClusterRoleBinding roleRef immutable after creation. To point a binding to a different role, it must be deleted and recreated. This allows subject-management permission without allowing the manager to change the granted role. Kubernetes provides reconciliation tooling that can handle this replacement when required.

Applicability
Review RoleBinding or ClusterRoleBinding replacement when its roleRef must change.
DSE recommendation
DSE recommends reviewing the complete subject list before replacing a binding, even when only the role name appears to change in the request. Identify the effective permissions of the old and new roles and the temporary access consequences of replacement. Keep the change attributable to an authorized operator, with a recovery path for accidental lockout. Do not solve an immutable-field error by granting broader role-management rights to an automation account. Make the intended access transition explicit in the deployment review rather than hiding deletion and recreation as a mechanical workaround.
Verification
In a test namespace, inspect the current binding and compare proposed effective permissions. Exercise the intended replacement procedure and verify each retained subject receives the correct new role. Confirm a representative action removed by the change is actually denied. Retain the old and new binding manifests with the complete subject sets. Ask each affected access owner to confirm the transition, including any access deliberately removed, before retiring the recovery instructions for the old binding.
