What you need to know
Missing request attributes can still cause a Deny statement to match.
Potentially affected
This applies to IAM conditions, especially statements spanning operations or resource types with different context keys.
DSE recommendation
DSE recommends writing a decision table for present-and-matching, present-and-different and missing values before editing a condition.
Missing request attributes can still cause a Deny statement to match.
Source facts
AWS documents that IfExists changes condition evaluation when a context key is absent. A Deny using a negated operator such as StringNotEqualsIfExists still denies when that key is missing. The Null operator separately tests whether a key exists, which is a different design decision.

Applicability
This applies to IAM conditions, especially statements spanning operations or resource types with different context keys.
DSE recommendation
DSE recommends writing a decision table for present-and-matching, present-and-different and missing values before editing a condition. List which covered operations actually supply the key. Review whether absent information should permit or deny the request rather than choosing an operator by its name. Keep conditions narrow enough that reviewers can explain each branch. Preserve a recovery path and the current policy before deploying a deny that could affect administrative or service-integrated requests. Have a second policy reviewer explain the missing-key row in plain language. Keep that expected result beside the policy text, including the covered operation that omits the attribute, so later edits can be checked against the original authorization decision.
Verification
Proposed verification: exercise all three context cases with approved test identities and resources, including an operation that lacks the key. Compare the observed results with the decision table and inspect the exact condition operator before rollout. Keep the table with the final policy review.
